Me: I'm think, I'm a kind of a masochist! Someone: What? How did you come to that conclusion? Me: I was thinking, 'the last fifteen minutes of S2 wouldn't have been SO painful if Michael Sheen and David Tennant weren't such great, wonderful actors'. Then I thought, 'good thing they're so great'.

one of my favourite things about getting close to new people is when i (dyed hair, piercings, alternative, queer, very online, in fandom, artsy, etc.) get to reveal that my life’s dream since i was like 13 is to become an accountant and i get to watch their brain malfunction in real time

Reparations: Black People Need MORE Than Just A Check
When we talk about reparations, it’s easy to reduce the conversation to a simple dollar amount, a check in the mail. But let’s be real—this isn’t an overnight issue, and it sure won’t be an overnight fix. The systemic dismantling of Black communities wasn’t accidental; it was intentional and strategic. So why would we think the solution could be anything less than equally intentional and strategic?
I had an insightful conversation with AJ about this, and we touched on something crucial: the true spirit of reparations isn’t about cutting individual checks. That’s not to say financial compensation isn’t warranted, but throwing money at the problem without addressing the infrastructure that was stripped away from us doesn’t actually fix the root issue.
Historically, when Black people were left to build for themselves, we thrived. We had economic hubs, independent businesses, thriving communities. And what happened? Those were taken from us—by destruction, by systemic exclusion, by policies designed to keep us from accumulating and maintaining generational wealth. The Freedman’s Bank is just one example. Black people were encouraged to invest in it, only to have those funds wiped out when Reconstruction was abandoned. Again and again, we’ve been stopped from being left alone to succeed on our own terms.
So, my take? Reparations should be about infrastructure. It should be about rebuilding what was taken—funding our own educational institutions, investing in Black-owned banks and businesses, revitalizing our communities, and ensuring we have the resources to create sustainable wealth that benefits future generations. That money should be managed by Black-led institutions, by committees of Black excellence, ensuring that it truly serves us and doesn’t just disappear back into the same institutions that created the disparities in the first place.
And let’s be real—when those COVID relief checks went out, a lot of people didn’t see long-term benefits from them. They came and went. That’s exactly what I fear would happen if reparations were reduced to just a one-time payout with no long-term strategy.
We need to think bigger. Reparations should be about restoring, not just compensating. It should be about ensuring that Black people in America are truly empowered to build, thrive, and sustain—just as we were meant to before the system worked against us.
So what does reparations look like to you? Let’s keep this conversation going. Watch the FULL CONVERSATION:

there's obviously a lot more to it but i think a decent litmus test to gauge how you're doing with regard to being socially safe for people in a given marginalized group to be around is how you react to their humor. do you take lighthearted ribbing of the majority outgroup as a personal offense? do you immediately close off if they joke about their oppression or lighthearted self-deprecation based on relevant stereotypes or tropes? or are you, yknow, chill about it? are you okay with not always being in on the joke?

By 1988 AGC was running advertisements proclaiming that 'AGC is now part-owner of a new private health scheme' with enthusiastic, even arrogant, text:
Way back in 1956, Doug Moran first came to us for property finance. He had plans for a modest nursing home. We liked it and financed it. Since then Doug Moran has been back to us more than 40 times, with bigger and better Health Care developments. We financed every one of those. And in doing so, the Moran Health Care Group and AGC Property Finance have now become Australia's foremost experts in what is a highly specialised field. So naturally when Doug planned his dream hospital, the Moran Clinic-Hospital of Excellence, he came to us. Because we were his first choice for finance. Situated on a prime peace of real estate on the Gold Coast, it was a development opportunity we weren't going to pass up. In fact we were so impressed with the plans we not only financed it, we bought 40% of it ourselves. Cementing our working relationship that spans more than 20 years. And even more recently we assisted the Moran Health Care Group in the purchase of yet another 13 private hospitals. Making them the largest private hospital operators in Australia. If you've got a property development, no matter the size, give us a call. You'll find us in every state.
